Edward was washing the dishes after having dinner that night, he had just watched another episode of his favorite TV show while eating a bowl of his favorite soup. All going according to the plan. So far. He had to leave everything behind when he heard the doorbell ringing vigorously. He dried his soapy hands and went to answer it. He was really surprised to see Megan standing by the door frame.
- Hi, Ned! - she said excitedly.
- Hi, Megan, what you’re doing here? It’s close to midnight.
- Oh, came on! Who cares about the time?
She said that already walking through the door. Ned was confused but as soon as she said that “Oh, came on!” he realized she was drunk. He could only watch her coming in and sitting in the couch.
- Megan, what were you doing? - he closed the door and walked to stood by her.
- Come sit with me, Ned! - she tapped the place next to her.
- No, Meg, you’re drunk.
She was shocked when he said that. That moment of silence was held is the air for a few seconds, but Megan interrupted it by laughing really loud.
- Stop, Megan! Shut up, it’s late! - he was worried, but her laugh was kind of cute and he could help himself. - Just stop, Meg. Where were you? - He sat by her in the couch.
- Ah, Ned! I was living life, right? We’re supposed to, right? Living and enjoying and being happy. Don’t you think? - she got dangerously close to him.
- You’re definitely right! - he moved away from her - You’re definitely right!
- Do you have anything to drink? Wine and stuff?
- Of course!
He got up and walked to the kitchen. “What the hell is happening?”. He leaned on the stand and tried to breath deeply. His peaceful night binge watching and eating just went to a totally different direction. He could hear her voice saying something, he could not understand, mostly because he was nervous, but also because she was just babbling around. Ned was thinking faster than ever. When he said yes for the drink question, he did not actually meant it. He did not used to drink at home, so there was nothing there for him to offer.
“Am I considering giving her more alcohol?”, he caught himself thinking of that. Then he just decided to give her a glass of water and pretend it was vodka or some clear drink. He filled the cup and had another deep breath before going back to the living room. He walked back there and found her looking through the window.
- There it is, I brought you some amazing drink! I made it myself. - she turned around and went for the cup - Be careful, it’s quite strong!
Megan took the cup and drank the water.
- That’s amazing, Ned, thank you so much. - she said gently.
She placed the cup by the TV bench and then grabbed him by his t-shirt. They stood there staring at each other for a while and then, suddenly, she kissed Ned’s mouth. His first reaction was to stand there, kissing her back. He used to dream about it all the time when they were doing college together, such a long time ago.
Ned always saw her as the perfect girl for him, she was pretty and funny, her red hair was quite shiny and always made him dream about it. Even though she never respond the feeling, he nourished that love for quite a long time. Ned stayed by her whenever we could, the became really close, best friends, and only that. He knew that it would never happen, yet he was there, all the time. When they graduated, he finally got over her.
All these thoughts went to through his mind during that kiss. Nevertheless, He felt an urge to stop it.
- What you’re doing, Meg? Don’t do that, please. - he hold her by her shoulders.
- Why? Don’t you love me? Haven’t you always loved me?
Her glowing eyes were staring at him.
- It’s not about it. - his cheek was turning red. - But, what are you talking about? Who told you that?
- Everyone knows that, Ned, come on! - Meg went back to the couch and sat there.
- I definitely didn’t know that. - He sat by her side.
They stayed there for a while, in silence. Ned wondered what to do next. Asking her to leave was too much, and it was too late to just deny it. He decided to go to other way.
- What time did you start drinking tonight?
- I don’t remember, why? Does it matter? - he stared at her - Since I left the office.
- When did you know that? I mean, that I’ve loved you? - Ned was a bit sad, looking at the floor again.
- People used to say that all the time, but I just didn’t believe. I just thought it was bullshit. - she lean on the armrest. - But in our prom night, your mother talked to me, - he looked at her, shocked - She said she was glad to meet the girl that made her boy so happy. Later some people told me that for a long time she thought we were a couple just by the comments you used to make about me.
- I’m sorry, I didn’t know that. - he looked away from her. - I am really sorry, you must have been embarrassed. I am really sorry. - he made a pause before saying the rest - But I’m afraid that it is all true. I’ve been in love with you since the day we met. Since the very first moment you opened your mouth to say my name in your sweet voice. Since the moment I saw your long red hair shining through that corridors. I loved you even in the worst moment, when we fought, argued and stayed weeks mad at each other. An I honestly thought I was over you, but only one kiss brought all those feelings back to me. Now I can say that, probably, I will never forget you. You will always be…
Ned hesitate and looked back to her. She was drooling with her mouth open. She was probably sleeping for a long time by that moment. He softly laughed when he saw that sweet and funny face.
- The love of my life.
